La Scala's

Roman Style Pizza

Update: 6/29/19

Per my text with Davide Lavadera:

La Scala’s on The Boardwalk in Ocean City is now closed.

Looking to reopen somewhere in Philadelphia.

If there's one thing I know, I know good pizza when I've eaten it. Let's just say, I've had a lot of experience in this area. I've enjoyed pizzas in many locations around the globe, and most recently, on the Ocean City, New Jersey boardwalk.

Today was a revelation, I had the best pizza on the boardwalk, at La Scala's Roman-style pizza. Yes. you heard me, Roman style.

The pizza was not your typical boardwalk slice. It was not hand tossed, it is not topped with canned sauce, cheap cheese, barbeque sauce or Buffalo chicken. It is identical to the delicious artisnal pizza I had when I was in Rome.

When it comes to pizza, it has been said, "it's all about the dough". Take my word for it, in this instance, it is.

The dough is fermented 4 days (or more) and is topped with an array of fresh ingredients. The result is a delicious, light, crispy, crunchy crust that stands up to the plethora of toppings that grace this labour of love. It is not Chicago style, nor is it heavy, doughy, greasy or typical.

It is (in my humble opinion) perfect and delicious.

Roman style pizza is all about the dough and FRESH ingredients

Davide Lavadera

The Lavadera brothers, oversee the operation. Born and raised in Naples, Italy, they cut their teeth working in their family's restaurant. Now, part of Philadelphia's La Scala's restaurant group, they proposed the idea of Roman style pizza on the Ocean City boardwalk. That idea was realized Memorial day weekend.

It is not only the best pizza on the boardwalk, it is some of the best pizza I’ve ever had.
